Let’s start with the definition of conversation -
“The spoken exchange of thoughts, opinions, and feelings; talk.”

REAL Conversations are not comprised simply of the exchange of words.  They are intentional, respectful and include a deep understanding of all perspectives involved. This occurs through verbal and non-verbal exchanges, listening with our ears and our eyes.

If our primary attention is on the conversation inside our own heads, then we cannot fully hear or see the dialogue occurring between us and another person. If we spend more time waiting to talk than listening because we already know we have the right answer, then we’re not productively engaged in the dialogue.

If we’re drifting to another reality, like what we want for dinner or how badly we need a vacation, then our energies are misspent. If we’re searching our memory for something triggered by the other speaker’s words, we’re not present in the conversation at hand.

REAL Conversations are open and reciprocal, where purpose and needs are clearly expressed, all perspectives are addressed and the relationship is enriched and energized by the verbal exchange.
