When you participate in a conversation, whether it’s for an hour or only 60 seconds, it is as if you are a character narrating a story.  A conversation is really no different from a well-written story, even a 60 second conversation. There is a beginning, middle and an end. There’s a plot to consider, the other characters and their motivations, setting.  When you speak with someone who may create an opportunity for you, the conversation (“story”) needs to engage the listener.  If you only have a few moments you need to pay particular attention and determine both your and the listener(s) need(s), desire(s), and interest.

You want your listener to be engaged in your content (what you say and how you say it). You also want to retain their interest and build their attentiveness, rather than have them shut down or disengage.  And at the conclusion of your dialogue, your listener should be satisfied or left wanting to reconnect with you.

When you want to communicate with another person, you invite the listeners to be involved by connecting to their world and at the same time sharing yours. The desired outcome is a reality that has expanded to include both points of view, wherein the results are beneficial for both of you.  When you tell Your Real 60 Second Story, this is exactly what happens.
